La España vaciada
The city-versus-country argument in Spain has a name: la España vaciada, the emptied Spain. Whole provinces of the interior now have among the lowest population densities in Europe — parts of Soria and Teruel are comparable to Lapland — after decades of people leaving for the coast and the cities. Villages hold on with a few dozen residents, mostly elderly, and lose the school, then the bar, then the bus. It has become a political movement with parties of its own winning seats.
