Hasta luego, even to strangers
Spaniards say hasta luego — see you later — to people they will certainly never see again: the cashier, the waiter, whoever held the door. It has drained of its literal meaning and become the ordinary way to leave. Adiós, by contrast, sounds heavier and more final than a textbook suggests, and gets used less. Venga is what closes the conversation itself, a verbal full stop meaning roughly right then. Be warned, too, that a Spanish goodbye is a process rather than a moment: the stretch between deciding to leave and leaving runs to twenty minutes.
