Whose Spanish is it?
Spanish has an academy, and unusually it does not act alone. The Real Academia Española, founded in 1713, writes the dictionary and the grammar — but since the 1950s it has worked as one of twenty-three academies across the Spanish-speaking world, agreeing changes jointly rather than issuing them. The result is a language governed collaboratively rather than from Madrid, which matters when only about a tenth of the world's roughly five hundred million Spanish speakers live in Spain. The Spanish you have learned here is Spain's. It will carry you across twenty countries, with adjustments you will enjoy making.
