Sleeping in a castle, by the state
Ask a tourist office where to stay and you may be pointed at a parador. Paradores are a state-run chain of around a hundred hotels housed in castles, monasteries, convents and palaces, begun in 1928 with two aims: to save historic buildings that had no other use, and to draw visitors into parts of Spain the coast was pulling them away from. They are comfortable rather than luxurious, priced moderately, and frequently the most interesting building in the town. Most have a restaurant built around whatever the region is known for.
