Five meals, and what each is called
Spain divides the day into five eating occasions rather than three. Desayuno is small — coffee and toast. Almuerzo is a mid-morning second breakfast, often taken standing at a bar around eleven. La comida, between two and three, is the main and largest meal of the day. Merienda at about six is a snack, and sacred to children. Cena, from nine, is lighter than the midday meal. The words repay getting right: comida means both food and lunch, and inviting someone to cenar at seven will only confuse them.
