The evening walk
El paseo is a fixed feature of Spanish life: the unhurried evening walk, taken for its own sake, along a seafront or a main street or around a plaza. Whole families go, several generations at a time, and the point is to be out among people rather than to arrive anywhere. It peaks on Sunday evenings and right through the summer, when the heat only lifts after eight. It is also why Spanish town centers are built to be walked and why children are still out late: the evening is when the street belongs to everyone.
