The limit is lower than you think
Spain's drink-driving limit sits well below the American one: 0.5 grams per liter of blood, and 0.3 for anyone in their first two years of driving or driving professionally. In practice that is one drink for most people and none at all for a new driver. Roadside checkpoints are routine rather than exceptional, and refusing the test is itself an offense. The license carries points that are deducted rather than accumulated, and running out costs you it. None of this sits oddly with the bar culture, because the usual answer is to walk or take the metro.
