On your birthday, you pay
The birthday convention runs backwards from the American one. In Spain the person whose birthday it is does the inviting and picks up the bill — invito yo, my treat — and letting other people pay for you on your own day would be faintly odd. Many Spaniards also keep a second celebration, el santo, the feast day of the saint they are named for, smaller but still marked with a call or a drink. If you are invited to a Spanish birthday, bring a present and let them buy the drinks.
