Life happens outside the house
Spanish social life takes place in public. People meet in bars, on terraces and in plazas rather than at one another's homes, and a Spanish apartment is private in a way an American house is not — an invitation to someone's place means something, and dropping in unannounced is rare. The reasons are partly practical: apartments are small, cities are dense, and a coffee or a caña costs very little. The plaza does the work a backyard does elsewhere, which is also why Spanish streets stay full of people, children included, late into the evening.
