御朱印 — the stamp book
Temples and shrines will, for a small fee, write in your book: the name of the place in brushed calligraphy over a red seal, dated by hand while you wait. The book is a 御朱印帳, bought at any of them, and collecting them has become a widespread hobby as well as a devotional record. Two conventions matter. It is a record of a visit, so pray first and collect after; and the book is for this purpose alone, not a general notebook.
