They bow to the plane
Watch from a window seat as a Japanese flight pushes back and you will see the ground crew line up, wave, and bow to the aircraft — not for the passengers' benefit, since most are not looking, but because seeing off what you have worked on is what you do. The same instinct runs through airport service: staff bow when a counter closes, and a departing bus driver may bow to the queue. It is professional courtesy rather than performance.
