Words you cannot say at a wedding
A Japanese wedding speech has to dodge 忌み言葉, words of ill omen. Anything meaning to cut, to part, to end or to return is avoided — 切れる, 別れる, 終わる, 帰る — and so are repeated words like 重ね重ね or またまた, since repetition suggests a second marriage. Speakers work around them with substitutions everyone recognizes: a party does not 終わる, it お開きになる, it opens. The constraint is why wedding speeches sound formal even from close friends.
