New notes, odd numbers
Money is the normal Japanese wedding gift, but how it is given is prescribed. It goes into a 祝儀袋, a decorated envelope, in crisp new notes fetched from a bank for the purpose — used notes suggest you did not prepare. The count should be an odd number of bills, because an even one divides in two, which is the wrong symbolism for a marriage. Thirty thousand yen is a common figure for a friend, and anything involving four is avoided.
