衣替え — the day the wardrobe changes
Japan changes its clothes on a date. 衣替え falls on the first of June and the first of October, and on those days schools and many companies switch between summer and winter uniforms — short sleeves to long, and back again — whatever the weather happens to be doing. Households traditionally swap the contents of the wardrobe at the same time. It is one of many places where the calendar outranks the thermometer, and it gives the seasons a formal edge.
