Everyone starts in April
Japanese hiring runs on 新卒一括採用, the simultaneous recruitment of new graduates. Students job-hunt in their penultimate year, all at once, in near-identical black リクルートスーツ, attend 説明会 briefings, and receive offers long before graduating — then everyone starts on the first of April together, with a ceremony. The system is efficient and unforgiving: missing the cycle, or graduating at an awkward moment, has consequences that follow a career, which is why mid-career hiring was historically thin.
