お土産, and the gift that returns
Two gift habits catch people out. お土産 is the souvenir you are expected to bring back for colleagues after any trip, usually individually wrapped regional sweets meant to be handed round an office — which is exactly what every station and airport shop sells. And a substantial gift usually triggers お返し, a return gift of roughly half the value, sent within a month. Receiving something generous is therefore the start of an exchange rather than the end of one.
