The garbage calendar
Japanese household waste is sorted far more finely than most visitors expect, and each category has its own collection day: burnable, non-burnable, PET bottles, cans, glass, paper, and often more. The ward issues a calendar, sometimes in several languages, and bags may have to be transparent or municipality-branded. Putting the wrong thing out on the wrong morning gets it left behind with a sticker on it, visible to the whole street — which is the actual enforcement mechanism, and it works.
