The wallet comes back
Lost property in Japan is returned at a rate that startles visitors. A wallet handed in to a 交番 is logged and very often reunited with its owner, cash included; umbrellas, phones and bags travel the same route through station offices and police boxes. If you lose something, go back to the place, then to the nearest station office, then to the 交番, and expect paperwork rather than a shrug. If you find something, handing it in is simply what is done.
