The seal, not the signature
Japan runs on the 印鑑, a carved personal seal, where other countries use a signature. Opening a bank account has traditionally meant registering one, and important documents are stamped rather than signed. A cheap ready-made 認印 covers everyday paperwork; a registered 実印 is for contracts and property. Digital reform has been chipping away at this since 2020 and many procedures now take a signature, but the seal remains the default assumption on a form, and is worth owning if you stay.
