Nurses in depopulated towns
In much of rural Japan the population is old and shrinking, and medical care is thin: a single clinic, a doctor who visits on set days, and long drives to the nearest hospital. People discharged from hospital often go home to live alone, and getting to appointments is a daily problem for those who no longer drive. Home-visit nursing (訪問看護) is one answer, and some towns have recruited nurses through the 地域おこし協力隊 program to support residents' health in the community rather than on a ward. Their work varies from town to town and is usually shaped by local talks, as 小林 says: health consultations, checking on elderly people living alone, or helping residents get to the clinic. The grammar of this lesson is the grammar of a careful start: を機に, を経て, ないとも限らない, に足る and 次第では.
