Key money you do not get back
Renting in Japan costs far more up front than the rent implies. 敷金 is a deposit and is refundable; 礼金 — key money — is a gift to the landlord and is not refundable at all, traditionally one or two months' rent. Add an agency fee, insurance, and a guarantor who is either a person or a paid company, and moving in can cost five or six months' rent before you have slept there. Listings are terse: 1LDK means one room plus a combined living-dining-kitchen.
