The second winter question
A 地域おこし協力隊 commission lasts up to three years, and from the first winter many members begin to ask what they will do afterward. The program's aim is that they settle in the area, and a majority of former members do stay in or near the town they served, while others move on. Common paths include farming, local businesses, work for the municipality or a cooperative, and starting a business such as a café, a farm stay or a guesthouse in a renovated empty house. Many municipalities offer support for members who start a business at the end of their term, and national programs have provided start-up subsidies for this purpose. Members often first test an idea quietly with a trusted local friend. This lesson reviews five points from years 2 and 3 — ものの, からこそ, わりに, ことだし and にもかかわらず — the grammar of looking back honestly.
