はざかけ and the mountain rain
In many rural areas, cut rice is still hung to dry on wooden or bamboo racks called はざ or 稲架 (はざかけ, also はさがけ), rather than dried by machine. Sun-drying for one to two weeks is said to improve the flavor, and a field lined with racks is a classic fall sight. Knocking a rack over in the rain wets and soils the rice at the most important moment of the year. Mountain rivers like the 仁淀川 can rise quickly when heavy rain falls upstream, even if it is lighter where you stand. Submersible bridges are designed to go under in high water, and local guides and authorities generally advise against approaching rivers during heavy rain or right after it. The grammar of this lesson is the grammar of explaining what went wrong: ばかりに, あげく, 末に, ものだから and だけに.
