もしもし, and the phone bow
もしもし belongs to the telephone alone — say it face to face and you are asking whether someone is awake. A business call opens differently again, with お世話になっております, roughly thank you for your continued support, said to anyone you deal with whether or not they have done anything lately. It is a formula rather than a sentiment. You will also see people bow while on the phone, alone, to someone who cannot possibly see them. The bow is not for an audience.
