Wash before you get in
Japanese bathing — an onsen, or the neighborhood 銭湯 — has one rule that governs the rest: you wash completely before entering the water. The bath is for soaking, not cleaning, so you sit at a low shower, scrub, rinse, and only then get in. Nobody wears a swimsuit, and the small towel you carry does not go into the water. Tattoos are still refused at many places, a rule rooted in organized crime rather than in taste, though it has been loosening.
