Synopses and readers' reports
Before a foreign publisher buys translation rights, the book usually passes through a reader — someone who reads the original and writes a reader's report: a summary of the plot, an assessment, and a recommendation. A synopsis from the original publisher helps the reader place the book quickly. Trieste's twentieth century is a history of changing sovereignty: part of Austria-Hungary until 1918, then of Italy; occupied by German forces in 1943–45; held by Yugoslav forces for some forty days in 1945; then divided into the zones of the Free Territory of Trieste, until Zone A, including the city, returned to Italy in 1954. The border between Italy and Yugoslavia was settled by treaty in 1975. Each of these events is remembered differently by different communities, and a summary states them plainly. The grammar of the C1 summary is compression: the present tense for plot, nominalization, reported speech, framing phrases such as sullo sfondo and attraverso, and a conclusion introduced by in sintesi.
