Warning the neighbors
Apartment walls in France are thin and the rules on noise are specific: tapage nocturne, night-time disturbance, can bring a fine, and neighbors do call. The accepted defense is notice. Before a party people put a note in the entrance hall with the date and an apology in advance, and the more sociable invite the immediate neighbors for a drink at the start, which turns a potential complainant into a guest. The same building culture expects bonjour in the stairwell and in the elevator, every time, with anyone you pass.
