France keeps a register of its prettiest villages. Les Plus Beaux Villages de France is a real association with a real jury: a village applies, and to qualify it needs fewer than two thousand inhabitants, at least two protected monuments, and a plan for keeping the place intact. Around 170 hold the label and display it on the sign at the entrance. The wider habit it belongs to is patrimoine — heritage treated as a public good — which also produces the Journées du Patrimoine each September, when state buildings normally closed to visitors open free of charge.
