Asking permission to say tu
Moving from vous to tu is a small social event with its own script. Someone proposes it — on peut se tutoyer ? — and by convention it is the older or more senior person who offers. Switching unilaterally reads as presumptuous, and the safe default with anyone you have just met, and with any shopkeeper or official of any age, is vous. Among people under thirty at a party the barrier is thin and tu may arrive within a sentence. Getting it wrong is survivable: a foreigner is granted a wide margin, and usually told kindly.
