CDI, CDD, and what the number means
Two things make a French job offer hard to compare with an American one. The contract type matters as much as the salary: a CDI is permanent and hard to end, a CDD is fixed-term, and landlords and banks treat them very differently — a CDI is what gets a rental application accepted. And the figure quoted is normally annual and brut, before social contributions come out, so take-home pay is meaningfully lower than the headline. Some employers spread it over thirteen months rather than twelve, which changes the monthly figure without changing the year's.
