Sales happen twice a year, by law
French shops cannot discount whenever they please. Les soldes are national, fixed by government decree to two periods of roughly four weeks, one in January and one in late June, with the dates set in advance and the same across the country. Outside them a shop may run promotions, but the deep reductions arrive on those dates, and shops open early on the first morning to lines at the door. Sizing is the other trap: French clothing runs on its own numbers and shoes on yet another set, so try things on rather than trusting a label.
