French hiring puts unusual weight on formal qualifications, and on which institution granted them. The grandes écoles sit apart from the university system, and their alumni networks shape careers for decades — a line about a school attended twenty years ago still sits on a CV and still counts. The lettre de motivation is expected alongside it and is actually read, so a generic one is held against you. Interviews are more formal than American ones and conducted in vous; the warm personal rapport an American interviewer looks for can read as presumptuous rather than friendly.
