Every wedding happens at the town hall
In France only the civil ceremony is legally binding, and it takes place at the mairie, conducted by the mayor or a deputy under a portrait of the Republic. A religious ceremony is optional, and where a couple wants one it has to follow the civil wedding rather than replace it — which is why French wedding photographs so often show two venues and sometimes two days. The banns are posted at the town hall beforehand. Couples who want the legal protections without a wedding can register a PACS instead, at that same town hall.
