After the Master's
For a student finishing a master's degree in France, the summer is often the moment of a real choice. Those who want to continue in research apply for a doctorate, usually with a supervisor and a funded contract, the contrat doctoral, for which competition is strong; others go into work, sometimes in a field quite different from their thesis. Letters of recommendation from supervisors matter in both cases, and students are expected to ask for them politely and well in advance. The DALF C1, like the DELF, is valid for life, and it is widely recognized by French universities and employers as proof of advanced French. Results are sent to candidates by the exam center, typically a few weeks after the exam. Relationships with supervisors often outlast the degree. Many students keep in touch for years, send news, ask for advice, and sometimes become colleagues. The switch from vous to tu, when it happens, marks that change, and a supervisor's small gestures, a book, a pen, a note in the margin, are often what students remember longest.
