免贵 — declining the honor
Asked 您贵姓 — your honorable surname — the polished reply is not simply 我姓王 but 免贵姓王: dispensing with the honorable, my surname is Wang. The honorific belongs to the asker's courtesy, so you decline it on your own behalf. It is a small ritual and it lands well, particularly with someone older or more senior. One traditional exception is worth knowing: people surnamed 孔, who claim descent from Confucius, are said not to use 免贵, the honor in their case not being the speaker's to decline.
