Chinese households save a strikingly high share of what they earn, among the highest rates in the world and far above the American figure. The reasons are structural rather than temperamental: a thinner safety net, the cost of housing, medical bills, and an expectation that a family helps a child buy a first apartment. 存钱 is therefore a plan rather than a habit, and a decision as large as moving south or changing career is normally preceded by a number in an account.
