Two days in June
The 高考 is the university entrance examination, sat over two days in early June, and it is the most consequential event in a Chinese education. The score decides which universities will take you and, to a considerable extent, what follows. The country rearranges itself around it: traffic is diverted from school gates, construction halts for quiet, parents wait outside in the heat, and police escort candidates who are running late. Around ten million sit it each year, which is why 考完 — having finished the exam — carries real weight.
