海归 — back from abroad
Chinese has a word for someone coming home after studying overseas: 海归, sea returnee, punning on 海龟, sea turtle. For two decades a foreign degree was close to a guarantee of a good job and families spent accordingly. That premium has narrowed as the numbers grew and domestic universities improved, which produced a companion joke — 海带, seaweed, for a returnee still looking for work. Mentioning time 国外 in an interview is still worth doing; it is now one credential among several rather than the decisive one.
