办卡, and why people hesitate
办卡 — taking out a membership card — is how Chinese gyms, hair salons, yoga studios and children's classes sell. You prepay for a year, or a hundred sessions, at a steep discount, and the salesperson's job is to move you up the tiers. The risk is familiar enough to have a name: 卷款跑路, the operator closing overnight with everyone's balance. It happens often enough that consumer bodies issue warnings and courts hear the cases. People buy the cards anyway, but they ask first how long the place has been open.
