Red and white
Color carries more weight in China than in English. Red is celebration and luck — New Year, weddings, and the 红包 of cash given at both — and a bride traditionally wears it. White is the color of mourning, so white flowers, white wrapping and white ribbon belong at a funeral rather than a birthday. Black is similarly funerary. The one to watch is a green hat: 戴绿帽子, wearing a green hat, means your partner is unfaithful, which makes it a poor present however good it looks on the shelf.
