The Bund
The Bund, 外滩, is Shanghai's riverside promenade along the Huangpu, lined with buildings from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and facing the towers of Pudong across the water. At night both banks are lit, and it is a favorite place for walks, photographs and reflection. For people working on projects about the city's past, the view sums up the contrasts: old banks and trading houses on one side, a skyline that barely existed in the early 1990s on the other. Spring Festival is the main family festival of the year, and people living away from home — in other cities or other countries — make great efforts to go back for it.
