Community screenings
Community screenings are a long tradition in China, from the outdoor film showings of the past to today's screenings in neighborhood centers, bookshops and universities. For a documentary about a place, showing it to the people who lived there is often the screening that matters most to the filmmakers. Such screenings often mix old and new communities. People who were rehoused from other redeveloped neighborhoods may see their own experience in the film, which turns a local story into a shared one. Food is part of the occasion: home-made dishes after a screening make it a gathering rather than a performance. An annual screening on the same date is one way of keeping a scattered community together.
