Seniors' universities
China has thousands of 老年大学, seniors' universities, run by local governments, companies and communities. They offer low-cost classes in calligraphy, painting, singing, dance, photography, smartphone use and more, and popular classes are often oversubscribed. For older people who have moved to new estates, such classes, along with canteens and dancing, are a common way of rebuilding a social life. Many older people also learn video calls and messaging from family and neighbors to keep in touch with friends who now live far away. Calligraphy holds a special place: it is a traditional art that many people of 顾阿婆's generation never had the chance to learn, and it can be taken up at any age.
