Distributing an independent documentary
Most independent documentaries reach audiences through a mix of channels: festivals first, then streaming platforms, occasional cinema screenings, and community, university and bookshop screenings, often followed by a discussion with the filmmakers. Platforms may offer more money for exclusive rights, which can stop a film from being shown elsewhere for years. Filmmakers who care about reach — or about obligations to the people in the film — often prefer non-exclusive deals and write specific conditions into contracts, such as free access for participants. Theatrical release is hard for documentaries in many markets, since cinemas give scarce screening slots to films expected to sell tickets. Word of mouth and social media sharing often matter more than advertising.
