Directors and the press
At festivals, directors give many short interviews, often the day after a premiere. Journalists commonly ask who made the film possible, how close the filmmaker was to the subjects, and what the film's position is on its subject. Documentary makers who film their own families face a familiar question about distance and fairness. Many answer by describing their method — rules they set themselves, how they included people who disagreed, what they chose not to show. Declining to give a verdict is a recognized position in documentary, especially on contested public issues: the filmmaker presents people's reasons and leaves judgment to viewers. Critics sometimes praise this as restraint and sometimes question it as avoidance.
