Consent and its limits
Documentary consent is usually given in writing before filming, but many filmmakers treat it as ongoing: people may change their minds as a project develops, especially when they see how they will appear or when circumstances change. Withdrawing consent after a trailer or rough cut is not unusual. The risks are often ones the filmmakers did not foresee. In this case, a shot of a partitioned room reveals group renting, which Shanghai regulations prohibit, and could cost the young man his home and his landlord a fine. Common remedies include removing a person entirely, blurring or replacing images, or keeping only the voice over neutral footage. The film removes 小刘's image and keeps, at his request, one sentence in his own voice.
