Funding a documentary
Independent documentaries in China are usually made on small budgets put together from several sources: the filmmakers' own money, small foundations and arts funds, broadcasters or streaming platforms, and, increasingly, crowdfunding. Many Chinese film festivals run 创投 sessions — from 创业投资, venture investment — where directors pitch projects in development to producers and funders, much like pitching forums at festivals elsewhere. Winning one rarely pays for a whole film, but it brings money, advice and attention. The fund in this story is invented. 何蔚's questions are the standard ones: why this film, why now, how will you avoid a year of footage with no story, and who is it for.
