The ferry stops at the Statue of Liberty first, and then here, which is how most immigrants would have seen it, although by then they'd been at sea for a week or more. Between 1892 and 1954, roughly twelve million people came through this building, and for most of them the inspection took only a few hours. My great-grandmother was one of them, so this place is kind of personal for me.

I didn't know that, and now I understand why you were so quiet on the ferry. Where did she come from, and do you know what happened to her after she arrived? At first I assumed that this museum was mostly about Europeans, so I'm already learning something.
