Have you seen the news this morning, because there's a fire in the Blue Mountains and the whole city smells of smoke? According to the fire service, it reportedly started late yesterday afternoon, and it's now burning across about two thousand hectares. They've declared a total fire ban for Sydney today, so nobody's allowed to light anything outdoors, not even a barbecue.

I wondered why the sky looked orange on the way in, and why my eyes were stinging on the bus. Is it close to the city, or does the smoke just travel a long way? In Toronto we had smoke from forest fires a few summers ago, and it came from hundreds of kilometres away.
