Every sign in this city is in two languages, and the top line is one I can't read at all. Is that Irish, and do people actually speak it, or is it mostly on signs and coins? I'm asking because I'd hate to say something stupid in the office on Monday.

It's Irish, which we also call Gaeilge, and under the Constitution it's the first official language of the State, with English the second. Most of us learned it at school for thirteen or fourteen years, much of which we've forgotten, if we're honest. There are areas in the west, called the Gaeltacht, in which it's still the everyday language, and there are families in Dublin who speak it at home, but they're a minority.
